PhD course : Global Engagement of East Asian Countries,

Dec 11-12, 2014 Presentation

This PhD course is arranged in connection with the “Political Economy of the Northern Sea Route” workshop held in Turku, Finland December 11, 2014. PhD candidates with a focus on global activities of East Asian countries (China, Japan, Koreas) are invited to participate in the two-day event. The PhD course consists of both a research workshop and a half-day PhD seminar with parallel sessions. During the seminar each student presents a paper on his/her topic as well as receives feedback from one or two experienced specialists from East Asian and European countries as well as other PhD students. The course thus provides an inspiring chance to learn and develop the PhD work through multidisciplinary, intercultural discussion.

Suitable topics include e.g. energy and resource security, food security, land grabbing policies, environmental responsibility, world trade, global investments, overseas development assistance, soft power, local-global linkages, peacekeeping operations and many more. Candidates from different stages of their PhD project are encouraged to participate in the course. PhD candidates can also present a research proposal in the seminar.

The working language of the research workshop and the PhD seminar is English. The length of the papers is 8-10,000 words (all inclusive). Full participation in the research workshop and the PhD seminar will correspond to a workload of 2 ECTS, or 4 ECTS if the PhD candidate also writes a learning diary of 4-5, 000 words. The credits will be granted by the University of Turku.
