On the first week of September 2013 (2-6 September) the European Association of Chinese Studies and the Department of Asian and North African Studies, Ca’ Foscari University Venice in cooperation with the Confucius Institute of Ca’ Foscari University, offers the Summer School “History and Historiography : the encounter with the West”.

The Summer school will deal with several issues related to the history and historiography of China and its relations with the West, from “The Role and meaning of Imperial History in Contemporary China” (Sean Golden, UAB Barcelona) to “Between Factual History accounts and ideological manipulations : History writing during the Eastern Zhou” (Yuri Pines, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) and “The Methodology of Contacts Between Cultures : the Case of Sino-European Contacts in the Seventeenth Century” (Nicolas Standaert, K.U. Leuven) (program LINK). The program includes a visit to the Marciana Library in S. Marco where the Marco Polo’s testament and some chinese manuscripts are preserved, a visit to Marco Polo’s house in Venice and to the Libraries of the Fondazione Cini in the marvellous S. Giorgio Island.

The summer school addresses MA and Ph.D. students in Chinese Studies. The professors are : Roger Greatrex (President Eacs, Lund University), Sean Golden (UAB Barcelona), Nicolas Standaert (K.U.Leuven) Urs App (Ecole Française d’Extrême-Orient, Paris), Yuri Pines (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Hans Van Ess (LMU University, Munich), Burchard Mansvelt Beck (Leiden University), Paolo Santangelo (University La Sapienza, Rome), Tiziana Lippiello (Ca’ Foscari University), Marco Ceresa (Ca’ Foscari University), Guido Samarani (Ca’ Foscari University), Laura De Giorgi (Ca’ Foscari University).

The students will be offered travel expenses in Venice, accommodation and lunches.

The application deadline is 24 june, the maximum number of students admitted is 30.
