Applications are invited for appointment as Postdoctoral Fellow in the Centre for China Studies from as soon as possible. Two such fellowships will be offered as part of an initiative to extend the Historical Anthropology of Chinese Society project beyond the late imperial period and through the twentieth century.
The Historical Anthropology of Chinese Society project is covered by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council « Area of Excellence » multi-year grant for the comparative historical study of local society in China through combined fieldwork and documentary methods. The Centre for China Studies is an interdisciplinary teaching unit with English taught and examined degree programmes for the study of China at the undergraduate, MA, MPhil and PhD levels. Applicants should have (i) a PhD degree in History, Anthropology or Sociology with a dissertation that focused on some aspect of a particular local or regional society in twentieth century China ; and (ii) advanced levels of English and Chinese language. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their research and overall academic record and their capacity to participate in a major collaborative research project.
The duties will primarily involve individual research and writing, in part, to complete a monograph for publication, and collaborative research involving workshops, seminars and joint fieldwork. No teaching will be required.
Appointments will be made on contract basis for one year commencing January 2015, renewable subject to mutual agreement and funding availability.
